The Complete History of O2 Mobile UK

"O2 is one of only two networks present on the very first day of UK mobile telephony — 7 January 1985 — when both Cellnet (now O2) and Vodafone launched simultaneously."

The story of O2 begins with the formation of Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Limited in 1983 — a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecom and security company Securicor. Having been awarded one of the UK's two original cellular licences, the network launched commercially on 7 January 1985 as Cellnet, operating on analogue TACS (Total Access Communications System) technology. Vodafone also launched on the same historic day.

BT acquired Securicor's stake in 1999, rebranding the service BT Cellnet. In 2001, BT took the transformative decision to spin off its entire mobile operations as a separately listed company — mmO2 plc. The O2 brand was then introduced globally in 2002, replacing the old names across all markets including UK, Germany, Ireland and Netherlands. In 2006, Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica acquired O2 plc for approximately £17.7 billion — one of the largest European telecoms transactions of the decade.

In 2021, O2 merged with Virgin Media to form Virgin Media O2 — a 50/50 joint venture between Telefónica and Liberty Global, creating a combined fixed/mobile business with ~£11bn revenues serving 46M+ connections. By 2024–2026, O2 deployed a 5G Standalone (5G+) network covering 87% of the UK population — the largest 5G SA footprint in the UK. In 2026, O2 became the first UK operator to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity via O2 Satellite, extending coverage to remote rural areas unreachable by mobile masts.

The Complete History of Three UK

"Three launched in 2003 as the UK's first 3G-only network — no 2G fallback — and built its identity around unlimited data and generous roaming long before rivals adopted either."

Three UK was launched on 3 March 2003 by Hutchison 3G UK Limited, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa (now CK Hutchison Holdings). Its defining characteristic at launch was a commitment to 3G-only infrastructure — no 2G network at all, which was a bold and controversial choice when 3G handsets were expensive and coverage was city-limited.

Three systematically positioned itself as the network for data-heavy users, undercutting rivals on data pricing and launching unlimited data plans years before O2, EE or Vodafone adopted them. The Go Roam scheme — free roaming in an ever-expanding list of countries at no extra cost — became Three's most celebrated feature and fundamentally disrupted UK roaming pricing. In 2015, Three's parent CK Hutchison attempted to acquire O2 UK for £10.25 billion, but the European Commission blocked the deal in May 2016. Three's subsequent merger with Vodafone UK, announced in 2023, completed in early 2025, creating VodafoneThree — the UK's largest network by subscriber count.

The Complete History of EE (Everything Everywhere)

"EE carries over 30 years of UK mobile heritage through Orange (1994) and One2One/T-Mobile (1993) — and holds two unique distinctions: UK's first 4G operator (2012) and UK's first 5G operator (2019)."

Orange UK launched in April 1994, backed by Hutchison Whampoa, with per-second billing, clean pricing and bold marketing. Its "The future's bright, the future's Orange" campaign became one of the UK's most iconic advertising lines. France Télécom acquired Orange in 2000 for £25.1 billion. One2One launched in September 1993 as the UK's first 1800MHz GSM digital network. Deutsche Telekom acquired it in 1999 for £8.4 billion, rebranding it T-Mobile UK in 2002.

In 2010, France Télécom (Orange) and Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) agreed to merge their UK operations into Everything Everywhere Limited. On 30 May 2012, EE launched the UK's first commercial 4G LTE network in 11 cities — a six-month head start over O2 and Vodafone, and over a year ahead of Three. In 2013, the company officially rebranded as EE, retiring both the Orange and T-Mobile UK brands. BT Group acquired EE in January 2016 for £12.5 billion. EE launched the UK's first 5G network on 30 May 2019 — exactly 7 years after its 4G launch. Its median 5G speed of 236 Mbps makes it the UK's fastest network as of 2026.

The Complete History of Tesco Mobile

"Tesco Mobile is the only UK mobile network that awards supermarket loyalty points on monthly mobile bills — a feature completely unique to this MVNO and its 5.7 million customers."

Tesco Mobile was established in 2003 as a joint venture between Tesco PLC (the UK's largest supermarket) and O2. As an MVNO, Tesco Mobile does not own physical network infrastructure. Instead, it purchases wholesale capacity from O2 and delivers services under the Tesco Mobile brand. Every Tesco Mobile customer uses the same physical masts and network equipment as O2 subscribers — receiving identical 4G and 5G coverage quality.

Initially a PAYG-only service, the network expanded to Pay Monthly contracts in 2008. The Tesco Clubcard integration — enhanced significantly in 2012 — makes Tesco Mobile the only UK mobile network to award loyalty points for mobile bill payments. These points can be redeemed in Tesco stores or exchanged for partner vouchers. The Home From Home roaming scheme provides free roaming in 48 countries. Tesco Mobile has won the Uswitch Best Mobile Network for Customer Service Award for five consecutive years: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 — an unprecedented achievement.

The Complete History of Vodafone UK

"Vodafone made the UK's very first commercial mobile phone call on 1 January 1985 — and its 2000 takeover of Mannesmann AG for £112 billion remains the largest corporate acquisition in history."

The Vodafone story begins with Racal Electronics, a British defence electronics company. In 1982, its subsidiary Racal Telecom Limited was awarded one of the UK's two original cellular licences. The network launched on 1 January 1985 when Sir Ernest Harrison, Racal's chairman, called Sir Anthony Bevins of The Times from Parliament Square — making the UK's very first commercial mobile phone call. Vodafone and Cellnet launched simultaneously on this historic day.

The name "Vodafone" combined Voice, Data and Fone. Racal Telecom was partially floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1988 and fully demerged as Vodafone Group plc in 1991. The company then expanded globally at extraordinary pace — the 1999 AirTouch merger ($60bn) was followed in 2000 by the hostile takeover of Germany's Mannesmann AG for approximately £112 billion, which remains the world's largest corporate takeover in history. In the UK, Vodafone has maintained top-4 position with particular strength in enterprise and international roaming. The VodafoneThree merger completed in 2025, creating the UK's largest network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Guidance
What is a SIM Only plan and who should consider one?
+
A SIM-only plan provides a SIM card with a monthly allowance of calls, texts and data — with no handset included. You use it in a phone you already own. Because no device cost is included, SIM-only plans are typically 30–50% cheaper per month than equivalent Pay Monthly phone deals. They are best for people satisfied with their current phone, those who purchased a phone outright, or anyone coming to the end of a Pay Monthly contract who wants to reduce costs. Available on 1-month rolling, 12-month and 24-month terms across all major UK networks.
How do I keep my number when switching networks in the UK?
+
Text PAC to 65075 from your current mobile — you receive a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) within one minute, free of charge. Give this code to your new network when signing up. Your number transfers within one working day. The PAC is valid for 30 days. To switch without keeping your number, text STAC to 75075 instead. Number portability is free and available on all UK networks.
What is 5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+) and how is it different?
+
Standard 5G uses Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture — 5G radios for data but still relying on 4G network infrastructure for signalling and control. 5G Standalone (5G SA) uses a pure end-to-end 5G core network with no 4G dependency. This delivers: lower latency (potentially under 5ms vs ~20ms for NSA), network slicing capability, better performance in congested areas, and improved reliability. O2 (5G+) and EE (5G+) both operate 5G SA networks in the UK. Three and Vodafone currently use NSA 5G architecture.
How did Brexit change UK mobile roaming rules?
+
Before Brexit, EU "Roam Like at Home" regulations required UK networks to charge UK prices for EU usage. These rules ended on 31 December 2020. Since then, each UK network sets its own roaming terms independently. Three includes free roaming in 71 countries (Go Roam); Tesco Mobile includes 48 countries free (Home From Home); EE charges ~£2.29/day on basic plans but includes free EU roaming on higher tiers; O2 and Vodafone terms vary by plan. Ofcom requires a default £45 data spend cap on all plans. Always check your specific plan before travelling.
What is an eSIM and which UK phones support it?
+
An eSIM is a digital SIM permanently built into your device — no physical card needed. Activate a plan by scanning a QR code. Compatible devices: iPhone XS and newer; Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer flagship models; Google Pixel 3 and newer. All major UK networks (O2, EE, Three, Vodafone, Tesco Mobile) support eSIM. Always verify your specific device model on the network's compatibility list — support varies between models in the same range.
What should I check before signing a mobile contract?
+
Key checks: (1) Signal coverage at home, work and key locations — use the network's own checker and Ofcom's independent tool; (2) Actual monthly data usage — check in your phone's settings; (3) Total contract cost — monthly × months + any upfront payment; (4) Annual price rise clause — what is the maximum cash increase per year?; (5) Early termination fee; (6) Whether 5G is included and your device is 5G-compatible; (7) Roaming terms for your travel habits; (8) Whether your phone is unlocked if switching networks.
What happens when my Pay Monthly contract ends?
+
Most networks continue charging the same amount after minimum contract end unless you act. If you had a Pay Monthly phone deal, the device is fully paid off by contract end — continuing at the same rate means overpaying. Options: (1) Upgrade to a new device on a fresh contract; (2) Switch to a cheaper SIM-only plan — often significantly cheaper; (3) Port to another network using a PAC code. Review your contract options 1–2 months before it ends.
Is this website affiliated with O2, EE, Three, Tesco Mobile or Vodafone?
+
No. Romosolf.online is completely independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, operated by, or financially connected to O2, Virgin Media O2, EE, BT Group, Three UK, CK Hutchison, Tesco Mobile, Tesco PLC, Vodafone Group, or any UK mobile network, MVNO or related telecoms company. We do not sell plans, SIM cards or handsets. Brand names are used only for factual educational reference. For official information, always visit each network's official website directly.
What is the difference between an MNO and an MVNO?
+
An MNO (Mobile Network Operator) owns physical infrastructure — spectrum licences, mobile masts and core network equipment. O2, EE, Three and Vodafone are all MNOs. An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) does not own physical infrastructure. It purchases wholesale capacity from an MNO and resells it under its own brand. Tesco Mobile is the UK's largest MVNO, running entirely on O2's physical network — its customers get identical coverage to O2 subscribers, with Tesco's own unique features (Clubcard points, etc.) on top.
Are mid-contract price increases legal in the UK?
+
Yes, provided they are clearly disclosed in the contract terms at the point of sale. Most UK networks apply annual increases linked to CPI plus an additional fixed percentage. Under Ofcom regulations from 2025, these increases must be stated in clear cash terms at the time of signing. Tesco Mobile offers select plans with no mid-contract price increases — check specific plan terms. Always read the price rise clause carefully in any mobile contract before signing.

It operates under Virgin Media O2 — a 50/50 joint venture between Telefónica and Liberty Global, formed June 2021. O2 originated as Cellnet in 1985 and is one of only two networks present on the very first day of UK mobile telephony.

O2 SIM Only Plans — Information

O2 SIM-only plans provide a SIM card with monthly calls, texts and data — no handset. Key details: available on 1-month rolling, 12-month and 24-month terms; data ranges from small allowances to genuinely unlimited; 5G+ (5G Standalone) access included on eligible tiers with a 5G-compatible device; eSIM available on compatible devices; roaming terms vary by plan tier.

What to Check Before Choosing an O2 SIM Only Plan

  • Signal coverage at your home and work postcodes — use O2's checker and Ofcom's tool
  • Your actual monthly data usage — check in phone Settings
  • Whether 5G is included and your device is 5G-compatible
  • Annual price rise clause details — cash amount disclosed at point of sale
  • EU roaming terms if you travel — varies by plan tier on O2
  • Whether your device is unlocked if switching from another network

O2 Pay Monthly Phone Contracts — Information

O2 Pay Monthly contracts include a new handset with device cost spread across a 24-month contract, plus an airtime allowance. Key points: optional upfront payment reduces monthly cost; total cost = upfront + (monthly × 24 months); annual price rise applies (CPI + fixed %); upgrade or SIM-only migration at contract end; early exit fee applies before minimum term ends.

💡 At contract end, switching to a SIM-only plan is often significantly cheaper because the device is fully paid off. Compare your options before your contract end date.

O2 5G+ (5G Standalone) Network

O2's 5G+ network uses pure 5G Standalone (5G SA) architecture — no reliance on 4G core for signalling. As of early 2026, O2's 5G SA network covers 87% of the UK population — the UK's largest 5G Standalone footprint. 5G+ delivers lower latency and better performance in congested areas than Non-Standalone 5G. Access is included at no extra cost on eligible plans with a compatible device.

O2 Satellite

In 2026, O2 became the first UK operator to offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity. O2 Satellite extends mobile coverage to remote rural areas unreachable by masts. Works with compatible smartphones — no extra hardware. Available as a Pay Monthly add-on.

O2 Priority

O2 Priority is a rewards programme for O2 Pay Monthly customers. Provides: priority access to live event and concert tickets; exclusive dining and entertainment discounts; partner brand promotions. Accessed via the O2 Priority app.

⚠️ All information on this page is for general educational guidance only. O2 plans and pricing change regularly. Always verify current details at o2.co.uk or by contacting O2 directly before making any decision.

About Three UK

Three UK is a Major Network Operator (MNO) that launched in 2003 as the UK's first 3G-only mobile network. Following its merger with Vodafone UK, Three now operates as part of VodafoneThree. Three is known for: the best-value data pricing in the UK market, the fastest average 5G download speeds, and one of the most generous roaming policies of any UK network.

Three SIM Only Plans

Three's SIM-only plans offer the lowest average cost per GB of any major UK network (~£0.21/GB). Unlimited data plans with no speed caps are a particular strength. 5G access is included at no extra charge on eligible plans. Available on 1-month rolling, 12 and 24-month terms. Annual price rise clauses apply — check contract terms.

Three Go Roam — International Roaming Information

Three's Go Roam is included at no extra cost on eligible Pay Monthly plans. It covers 71 countries — all EU member states plus US, Australia, New Zealand and many others. Your UK allowance is used as normal in Go Roam destinations. Fair use policies apply on unlimited plans in certain destinations. Always check the current Go Roam destination list and fair use policy at three.co.uk before travelling.

Three 5G Network

Three has the fastest average 5G download speed of any UK network — 187 Mbps (Opensignal January 2026) — and won the Ookla Speedtest Award for Fastest 5G Network 2025. Home › SIM Only Plans Guide

SIM Only Plans — UK Information Guide

Independent guide to SIM-only mobile plans — what they are, who they suit, and what to check.

What is a SIM Only Plan?

A SIM-only plan provides a SIM card with a monthly allowance of calls, texts and data — no handset included. You use it in a phone you already own. Because no device cost is subsidised, SIM-only plans are typically 30–50% cheaper per month than equivalent Pay Monthly phone contracts.

Contract Length Options

1-Month Rolling: Maximum flexibility — cancel with 30 days' notice. Usually slightly more expensive per month. Best for those unsure of long-term needs or testing a network.

12-Month: Balanced option — moderate commitment, better pricing than rolling. Good middle ground.

24-Month: Usually best monthly value. Requires 2-year commitment. Check annual price rise clause carefully.

Data Allowance Guide

DataSuitsTypical Usage
1–5 GBLight usersMainly on Wi-Fi, occasional browsing
10–20 GBModerate usersSocial media, maps, occasional streaming
30–50 GBRegular usersVideo streaming, working from cafés
100 GB+Heavy usersHeavy streaming, mobile hotspot
UnlimitedVery heavyNo cap — check speed limits and hotspot terms

💡 Check your actual usage: iPhone → Settings → Mobile Data (scroll for app usage). Android → Settings → Network → Mobile Data Usage.

Checklist Before Signing

  • Network coverage at home, work and key locations
  • Whether your phone is unlocked (required if switching networks)
  • Annual price rise clause — cash amount per year
  • Data overage policy if you exceed allowance
  • EU and international roaming terms
  • Whether 5G is included and device is 5G-compatible
  • Notice period to cancel
Home › Pay Monthly Phone Guide

Pay Monthly Phones — UK Information Guide

How Pay Monthly phone contracts work, cost breakdown, and what to check before signing.

What is a Pay Monthly Phone Contract?

A Pay Monthly contract bundles a new handset with an airtime plan (calls, texts and data) into one monthly direct debit. The device cost is spread over the contract term (usually 24 months). At contract end, you own the phone and can upgrade, switch to SIM-only, or port to another network.

Cost Breakdown

  • Upfront payment: Optional — reduces monthly amount. Ranges from £0 to hundreds depending on device.
  • Monthly device element: Handset cost (minus upfront) divided by contract months.
  • Monthly airtime element: Cost of calls, texts and data allowance.
  • Total cost of ownership: Upfront + (monthly × months) = true total paid.

💡 Always calculate the total contract cost — not just the monthly figure. A lower monthly over 36 months often costs more than a higher monthly over 24 months.

Annual Price Rises

Most UK networks apply annual mid-contract increases (CPI plus a fixed %). From 2025, Ofcom requires these to be disclosed in clear cash terms at point of sale. Tesco Mobile offers select plans with no increases — check specific plan terms.

At Contract End

Most networks continue billing at the same rate unless you act. Options: upgrade to new device; switch to cheaper SIM-only (device now paid off); port to different network. Review options 1–2 months before your contract end date.

Checklist Before Signing

  • Total cost of ownership across the full contract period
  • Annual price rise — maximum cash increase per year
  • Early termination fee amount
  • Data allowance vs your actual monthly usage
  • Network coverage at home and workplace
  • Whether 5G is included on the plan
  • What happens at contract end automatically
Home › Pay As You Go Guide

Pay As You Go — UK Information Guide

How PAYG works in the UK, who it suits, and how it compares to SIM-only contracts.

What is Pay As You Go?

PAYG means paying in advance — no monthly contract. Top up credit, buy 30-day rolling bundles of data, calls and texts. No commitment — simply stop topping up when no longer needed.

Who is PAYG Best For?

  • Very occasional or low-usage mobile customers
  • Children needing controlled mobile access
  • Backup SIMs used occasionally
  • Short-term UK visitors needing a temporary number
  • Anyone who prefers no direct debit obligation

💡 If you regularly buy the same PAYG bundle monthly, a 1-month rolling SIM-only plan typically offers 2–3× more data for the same spend — with identical flexibility to cancel with 30 days' notice.

PAYG vs 1-Month Rolling SIM Only

For regular mobile users, a 1-month rolling SIM-only contract almost always offers better value than PAYG. PAYG is better only for genuinely very low or occasional usage where a monthly bundle is not cost-justified.

Home › eSIM Guide

eSIM — UK Technology & Information Guide

What eSIM is, compatible devices, activation process and UK network support.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM permanently built into your device hardware — no physical card to insert or remove. It is a chip soldered onto the circuit board that can be programmed with different network profiles digitally. Activate a plan by scanning a QR code.

How to Activate an eSIM

  1. Order an eSIM plan from your chosen UK network
  2. Receive a QR code by email or in the network's app
  3. Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM (iPhone) or SIM Manager → Add eSIM (Android)
  4. Scan QR code — profile downloads and activates (usually within minutes)

Compatible Devices

iPhone: XS, XS Max, XR (2018) and all newer models.

Samsung Galaxy: S20 (2020) and newer flagship models.

Google Pixel: Pixel 3 (2018) and all newer Pixel models.

iPad: Air (3rd gen+), Pro (3rd gen+), mini (5th gen+), iPad (7th gen+).

⚠️ Always verify your specific device model on your network's eSIM compatibility list — support varies within device families.

Benefits

  • Instant activation — no waiting for a physical SIM by post
  • Dual SIM — run UK + travel eSIM simultaneously on compatible phones
  • No physical loss — nothing to drop, damage or lose
  • Travel — add a local eSIM abroad without removing your UK SIM

UK Networks Supporting eSIM

All five major UK networks support eSIM: O2, EE, Three, Vodafone and Tesco Mobile. Available across SIM-only and Pay Monthly plans.

5G & Coverage — UK Information Guide

4G, 5G and 5G Standalone explained — how to check signal and what affects coverage quality.

4G vs 5G vs 5G Standalone

4G LTE: Typical 20–70 Mbps. Sufficient for all everyday tasks including HD video. All major UK networks: 99%+ 4G population coverage.

5G: Typical 100–500+ Mbps. Lower latency, greater capacity. Beneficial for heavy users, hotspot use, 4K streaming. Requires 5G-compatible device.

5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+): Pure end-to-end 5G core — no 4G dependency. Benefits: sub-5ms latency potential, network slicing, better performance in congested areas. O2 (5G+) and EE (5G+) are the UK's current 5G SA operators.

UK 5G Summary — 2026

Network5G CoverageArchitectureSpeed Data

EE89%+ outdoor (SA)Standalone (5G+)236 Mbps median
Three71%+ premisesNon-Standalone187 Mbps avg

How to Check Coverage

  • Network checkers: Each network's website has a postcode checker for 4G and 5G indoor/outdoor signal
  • Ofcom (ofcom.org.uk): Independent multi-network postcode checker — most useful for comparing
  • Real-world test: Test a PAYG SIM at your actual location before committing to any contract

Improving Weak Indoor Signal

  • Wi-Fi Calling: All major UK networks support this — make calls over home broadband. Free. Enable in phone Settings.
  • Position near windows or on higher floors where signal is stronger
  • Thick concrete, energy-efficient glass can significantly reduce indoor signal

💡 Coverage maps are predictions — test with a PAYG SIM at your actual address before committing to a long contract.

Home › Roaming Guide

International Roaming — UK Information Guide

Post-Brexit roaming explained, each UK network's current policy, and tips for travelling abroad.

How Brexit Changed UK Roaming

Before Brexit, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules required UK networks to charge UK prices in the EU. These ended on 31 December 2020. Since then, each UK network sets its own roaming terms independently.

⚠️ Always check your specific plan's roaming terms directly with your network before travelling. Policies change frequently. The guidance below is general only.

UK Network Roaming Policies — General Guidance (2026)

Three (Go Roam): 71 countries free on eligible Pay Monthly plans. UK allowance used as normal. Fair use applies to unlimited plans in certain destinations. Check three.co.uk for current destination list and FUP.

Tesco Mobile (Home From Home): 48 destinations free. UK allowance used as normal. No plans announced to introduce charges. Check tescomobile.com for current destination list.

EE: Essentials tier: ~£2.29/day EU roaming. All Rounder: free EU roaming included. Full Works: worldwide roaming (50GB FUP). Check your specific tier at ee.co.uk.

O2: Varies by plan — some include EU roaming, others require a daily Roaming Passport add-on. Check My O2 app or o2.co.uk before travelling.

Vodafone: Terms depend on specific plan. Strong coverage in 100+ countries. Check vodafone.co.uk.

Ofcom £45 Spend Cap

All UK networks must apply a default £45 data roaming spend cap per billing period (excl. VAT). Data roaming pauses automatically at this cap. Adjustable by contacting your network.

Travel Tips

  • Check your specific plan's roaming page for each destination country before travel
  • Download offline maps before departure to reduce data usage
  • Use Wi-Fi Calling over hotel Wi-Fi to avoid roaming charges for calls
  • Disable background app refresh and auto-downloads when roaming
  • Verify the £45 spend cap is active on your account
  • Consider a travel eSIM from a specialist provider for trips of a week or more
